Authorities say a gunman was arrested after shooting eight people dead, including a sheriff’s deputy late Saturday in Mississippi.

According to Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain, the mass shooting incident occurred at three separate homes Saturday night in rural Lincoln County, the Daily Leader reported.

Law enforcement officials said police arrested the suspect identified as 35-yeaer-old Willie Cory Godbolt.

Strain stated that at some point after the shooting had occurred, Godbolt had taken a 16-year-old hostage, but was discovered unharmed.

Reports indicate the deputy, who was killed in the shooting along with three others, had responded to calls of a complaint after Godbolt refused to leave an individual’s property in Lincoln County.

Family members say a husband and wife were among the victims killed inside the second residence.

Police said Godbolt has an extensive rap sheet which includes a 2005 armed robbery, in which he reportedly pistol whipped a vicitm.

Strain says charges have not yet been filed against the suspect and that it would be “premature” to discuss a motive pending further investigation.

Police haven’t released further information nor have officials revealed whether the suspect knew his victims before allegedly committing the mass murder.
