A shootout between heavily armed imprisoned cartel inmates and police at a criminal detention center in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas has left at least four dead including three police officers and six injured following a riot at the detention center.

The prison in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas, became a battlefield late Tuesday night after a riot erupted into a shootout between imprisoned members of Los Zetas and authorities.

According to local reports, the riot erupted between members of rival Los Zetas factions, the Cartel Del Noreste and Old School Zetas. Both sets of inmates had been incarcerated at the facility.

The two rival groups remain engaged in a brutal turf war for control of Ciudad Victoria, Nuevo Laredo, and other drug trafficking territories throughout Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon.

The riot quickly evolved into a full-fledged gun battle after authorities moved into the prison in an attempt to quell the violence.

The firefight lasted over an hour and a half resulting in three police officers and a prison custodian killed, according to Mexican law enforcement officials.

A state police spokesperson confirmed on Twitter the number of agents killed in the action.

The Mexican publication El Mañana had begun live broadcasts of an operation at the Sanctions Execution Center when the shooting broke out.

Officials said Police made an incursion into the penitentiary when the shooting began.

However, minutes later they began to hear the sounds of high-powered automatic weapons coming from the facility.

Authorities closed all roads that converge to the detention and set up a perimeter to secure the population from the ongoing violence.

At least a dozen ambulances arrived at the facility to tend to the eventual wounded.
