Police officials say the body of former Buffalo Bills wide receiver James Hardy III was discovered in a river in Allen County, Indiana on Wednesday

According to multiple reports, the Indiana Coroner’s Office positively identified the body as the 31-year-old former NFL player on Thursday.

James Hardy III was a second-round draft pick out of Indiana University who played for two seasons with the Bills in 2008 and 2009.

Fort Wayne Police responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday after a worker reported a putrid smell coming from the Maumee River.

Emergency services managed to locate the body in a log jam.

Hardy had several run-ins with the law in recent years. He was charged with attacking police officers who had responded to a disturbance at his Los Angles home in May 2014.

However, a judge ruled Hardy not mentally competent to stand trial and was admitted to a mental institution, TMZ reported.

Police have not released an official cause of death.
