Police in El Paso arrested the mother of a four-year-old boy, who was discovered wandering in Mexico in February, after concluding that she abandoned her child.

On Tuesday, authorities arrested 25-year-old Ruby Esmeralda Gonzales on charges of child abandonment with imminent danger, an El Paso Police Department press release revealed.

The El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons unit indicated that the child was discovered wandering by himself in Juarez, Mexico, on February 22nd.

An investigation concluded that Gonzalez, who resides in El Paso, purportedly took the child to Juarez and ditched him in an abandoned building. Later that day, she returned to Texas. The child was identified as a U.S. citizen.

Mexican police located the boy by himself and tried to identify him but were only able to determine that “Luis” might be his first name, KXAN reported. Because of the four-year-old’s English, authorities concluded that he was an American citizen.

El Paso police first heard about the boy last week from Mexican police when a supervisor in the El Paso Police Crimes Against Persons unit visited an Amber Alert seminar in Mexico City and heard about the incident, El Paso Police Department spokesperson Sergeant Enrique Carrillo said.

Authorities in El Paso subsequently issued a press alert about the unnamed boy. Local media posted pictures of the child asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him. El Paso police said that on June 3rd, “after seeing photographs of the victim on television stations, Gonzalez called the police to report the kidnapping.”

On Tuesday, police arrested Gonzalez and charged her with child abandonment. She was booked into the County Detention Facility on a $10,000 bond.

The boy remains in the custody of social services in Juarez.
