The dramatic moment that drug smugglers spotted from the air and attempted to outrun authorities in a chase on the choppy Adriatic Sea has been captured on video.

The narcos were traveling on the open waters to the Italian coast when a surveillance chopper noticed it moving at over 40 miles per hour through the waves.

The tiny inflatable vessel, with two men on board, had a load of marijuana, worth an estimated £250,000, the Daily Mail reported.

The boat was detected by a Civil Guard helicopter as part of the ongoing operation named “Triton.”

Attempts by the drug smugglers to flee from the helicopter were unsuccessful.

Anti-narcotics officials said the drug vessel was stopped by three law enforcement boats after Rome’s operations center was contacted.

Italian Police discovered 1,413 kilos of marijuana on board wrapped in 77 packages and concealed under the tarpaulin onboard the fast boat.

Authorities seized possession the boat and steered it back to the port of Bari, the capital of Italy’s Apulia region.

Operation Triton is headed by Italian authorities but also involves the assistance of 15 countries, including Spain, France, Ireland, and Poland.

The border operation focuses on catching drug smugglers and immigrants attempting to enter the European country illegally.
