Colorado Police have arrested a 15-year-old teen on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of 10-year-old Kiaya Campbell.

Local authorities said the girl was reported missing in the city of Thornton around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Her body was discovered the following day in a grassy area about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from her father’s home, The Associated Press reported.

Investigators said her body had evident signs of severe trauma.

Law enforcement officials revealed that Kiaya Campbell was last seen with the 15-year-old son of her father’s girlfriend.

Police wouldn’t confirm if he was the boy detained Saturday night. The girlfriend’s son had reported that he and the girl had gotten separated during a thunderstorm.

According to Fox affiliate KVDR, the 15-year-old teen was taken to the Adams County Juvenile Detention facility and later booked on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Thornton police spokesman Victor Avila said during a new conference that because the boy is a juvenile, his name will not be released.

Investigators didn’t release other details, including a possible motive. However, the Coroner’s office did confirm Campbell’s death was other than accidental.
