Neighbors described James T. Hodgkinson, the gunman responsible for shooting House Majority Republican Whip Congressman Steve Scalise, and several others at an early morning baseball practice on Wednesday in Northern Virginia, as a political nut, who was reckless with firearms.

Scalise remains in critical condition after he was shot by 66-year-old Illinois resident.

According to multiple reports, the bullet had reportedly entered Steve Scalise’s hip before “traveling across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding.”

The shooter subsequently died during an ensuing gunbattle with Capitol Hill police who had been guarding the Congressional leader.

Video of the shooting can be seen below.

Hodgkinson had belonged to a Facebook Group group called “Terminate the Republican Party,” which seemed to shed light by the comments of South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan, who said the suspect politely asked him whether it was a Democratic or Republican team as he was leaving the practice field.

Neighbors said Hodgkinson had lawn signs outside his Belleville home supporting Bernie Sanders and frightened neighborhood residents after firing shots with a high-powered weapon in his backyard, the New York Post reported.

“He’s just been a radical nut, who had been barred from all county board meetings and stuff like that. I guess he’s caused trouble in various places,” Karmen Schaumleffel said about Hodgkinson.

Schaumleffel said she and her spouse were forced to call police after Hodgkinson refused to stop firing his weapon in the middle on the afternoon.

“My husband had yelled at him because the kids were outside and everything and he didn’t stop, He was shooting in his backyard over this way in our field,” she said.

Hodgkinson was described by Schaumleffel as “quite vocal” and “obnoxious” about his political beliefs.

Another neighbor, 56-year-old Fred Widel, who lived next door to James T. Hodgkinson for three years, described him as “modest.”

“He used to remove the snow for all the neighbors, and hosted a Halloween party a few years ago,” Widel said.

“I don’t think Tom was a killer. I just think something broke,” he added.
