Mexican security forces engaged cartel gunmen in an intense firefight, which brought the resort city of Cancun to a standstill on Thursday evening as military troops and federal police officers battled groups of hitmen in the heart of a commercial tourist center.

Quintana Roo state government officials have not confirmed the number of casualties or people wounded in the violence.

However, Mexican publication El Debate is reporting that so far at least one person has been killed and four others wounded in the gunbattle.

The armed clashes occurred in the Plaza de Toros tourist center, a section of Cancún filled with restaurants and bars, generating a tense climate of fear throughout the area.

Authorities pursued the groups of gunmen, arresting several people.

Cartel-related violence has continued to encroach into the tourist centers of Quintana Roo.

Back in January, a shootout that erupted between rival cartel gunmen erupted at a tourist-filled BPM Electronic Music Festival event at the Blue Parrot Bar in the resort city of Play del Carmen, resulted in five people killed including an 18-year-old American girl who was crushed to death in the ensuing panic.

Two days later, four people were killed, including one police officer after cartel gunmen attacked the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office in Cancun.
