Authorities have charged a North Carolina mother with the attempted murder of her one-year-old son after she was caught on camera repeatedly trying to smother the child at a Charlotte hospital.

The woman identified as 32-year-old Maggie Dixon had taken the child to Levine Children’s Hospital with respiratory symptoms similar to pneumonia on Saturday night.

Nurses noticed the boy had trouble breathing and his vital signs showed abnormalities every time he was left alone with his mother, WSOC-TV reported.

Dixon was allegedly caught on camera Saturday repeatedly trying to smother her son using both her hands and a pillow in his room at Levine Children’s Hospital (pictured)

Hospital staff notified police after reviewing surveillance footage taken from the room and witnessed Dixon attempting to smother the child four separate times using her hands and a pillow.

Police removed the woman from the medical facility and took her in for questioning before charging her with first-degree attempted murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.

As of Monday, Dixon remained in jail on $200,000 bond.

Police say the boy showed no apparent signs he had suffered abuse at home before Saturday night’s incident.

Law enforcement officials said the toddler remains in stable condition at the hospital.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Division of Social Providers said the child would likely be placed in the care of his father, who lives apart from Dixon once he makes a full recovery.
