New York Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin has turned himself on a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an altercation at a Manhattan nightclub back in April.

NYPD Police officials say Mauldin allegedly punched 22-year-old Jean Lopez after he accidentally splashed champagne on him at the Highline Ballroom on April 22nd, according to the New York Daily News.

The victim reportedly needed surgery after suffering several broken facial bones and has since filed a civil suit against the 24-year-old Mauldin, Lopez’s attorney Glenn Race said.

“We learned of the charges brought today by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which we expected all along. At this point we feel that it is appropriate to make no further comment so that justice will prevail,” Race said.

Cops said Mauldin turned himself in on Wednesday at the 10th precinct in Chelsea at 8:50 a.m. on misdemeanor assault charges.

Alex Spiro, the attorney for Lorenzo Mauldin, said his client was shocked after learning of the allegations last week and vowed to fight the criminal charges and the lawsuit.

““We will answer the charges in court,” Spiro said.

Mauldin, a Georgia native, was drafted by the New York Jets in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft.

New York Jets representatives have so far declined to comment on the charges pending against Mauldin.
