Former Mexican legislator Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez who is said to have once had a love child the notorious drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, while he was serving his second prison stint,  was arrested at the California border and charged with working with the Sinaloa cartel.

Guadalupe Sanchez, a former legislature representative in Sinaloa, was charged Thursday in San Diego with conspiring to distribute 11 pounds of cocaine in the U.S. between 2013 and 2017.

Additionally, a person cooperating with the investigation has also identified the woman as Guzman’s girlfriend. Sanchez was even said to be present when he escaped authorities in 2014 through a tunnel.

Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez was charged Thursday with drug conspiracy as she attempted to enter the US. The former Mexican state lawmaker is said to have romantic ties to El Chapo

Sanchez was apprehended on Wednesday as she tried to enter San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico via the pedestrian bridge at the Otay Mesa Cross Border, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A Customs and Border Patrol agent learned that the U.S. State Department had canceled her visa and she was a drug trafficking suspect.

Sanchez has rejected claims that she was Guzman’s girlfriend, and her attorney said she was traveling to the U.S. to seek asylum after getting death threats in Mexico.

However, the source said she used the aliases ‘Maico’ and ‘Tere’ during her relationship with Guzman, and reportedly gave birth to a child fathered by the Cartel boss.

The federal complaint cited communications intercepts supporting the claim that she was with Guzman when he evaded capture.

Sanchez served in the Sinaloa state legislature where she was known in the Mexican media as ‘Chapodiputada’, or ‘The Chapo legislator’

Guzman was extradited to the U.S. and remains in a maximum security facility in Manhattan, where he faces a litany of charges.

The 60-year-old drug lord is now married to beauty queen Emma Coronel, 27, with whom he has twins.

In Sinaloa, the media referred to Sanchez as “Chapodiputada,” or “The Chapo legislator.”

After Guzman escaped the 2014 raid, Sanchez reportedly advised him to travel to the Cosala district “because she worked there as a deputy.”

Sanchez was arrested Wednesday morning trying to enter San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico via the at the Otay Mesa Cross Border Xpress pedestrian bridge

Guzman was apprehended several weeks later but escaped from prison for a second time before he was recaptured and extradited to the U.S.

The complaint also stated that during Homeland Security investigation into the Sinaloa cartel in 2012, Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez was identified in helping traffic drugs and launder profit for Guzman.

She has been to remain behind bars without bail because she is considered a flight risk.
