Every year, thousands of pounds of illegal narcotics are seized by law enforcement officials in Texas.

New information obtained from the public safety department for the month of June shows just where a majority of the drugs seizures took place last year.

Most of the busts occurred along the state’s highways and interstates that span into Mexico, major cities, and neighboring states, the Houston Chronicle reported.

One major caveat is that the information only includes seizures involving the public safety department, meaning counties that rely on their own law enforcement will see decreased amounts of drugs seized in their areas by DPS.

For example, agencies like the Houston Police will handle their cases, and their data isn’t included in the DPS database.

A recent report published by the DPS indicated that marijuana is still the most commonly used and most widely available drug in the country.

The DPS said that cartels provide drugs to cities throughout Texas and rely on Texas-based gangs to distribute the drugs nationwide. Meth, in particular, has been on the rise in the Houston area.

Last year, the FBI and Houston Police busted a drug enterprise in Houston. It was called Operation Hielo Mexicano and revealed just how serious crystal meth’s grasp on Houston had grown.

In many instances, these drugs are smuggled and grown by cartels in Mexico that are using the drug operations to finance their illegal activities and maintain their lavish lifestyles.
