Mexican authorities say a local politician found executed last week in the western state of Sinaloa, was the brother-in-law of imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Damaso Lopez Nunez, also known as ‘El Licenciado.’

Sinaloa state officials said police discovered the body of 49-year-old Fernando Gaxiola Noriega last Wednesday on a dirt road connecting the Mexico 15 International Highway to the Antorchista colony in southern Culiacan.

The discovery was made hours after armed men kidnapped Gaxiola Noriega from an establishment in Culiacan, El Debate reported.

According to local reports, Gaxiola Noriega was shot at close range, execution-style with an AK-47 assault rifle.

The Medical Examiner said family members positively identified the body of the victim at the Forensics Medical Offices in Culiacan.

Gaxiola Noriega, a member of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) political party, served as the municipal administrator in the town of El Dorado, a known stronghold of Damaso Lopez, who led the Los Damaso faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Local reports indicate Gaxiola Noriega was married to the sister of Lopez Nunez, who was captured during an operation on May 2nd in Mexico City.

‘El Licenciado,’ is a former lieutenant to top boss Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, currently awaiting trial in Brooklyn, New York for running a transnational criminal enterprise.

Following El Chapo’s extradition in January, U.S. and Mexican authorities had identified Damaso Lopez Nunez as Guzman’s successor.

At the time of his arrest, Lopez-Nunez was in the midst of a violent struggle with the children of ‘El Chapo’ for control of the criminal organization.

The internal war unleashed a wave of violence which caused the murder rate to skyrocket in Sinaloa.

Investigators believe Gaxiola Noriega’s apparent family ties with Damaso Lopez served as the likely motive in his execution.
