Chicago Police officials say an officer shot and killed a man armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and a handgun while responding to an emergency call late Saturday.

According to Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the officers were responding to a report of gunfire aropund 10:45 p.m. in the Lawndale neighborhood when they encountered an armed man in the backyard of a home on the city’s west side late Saturday.

Guglielmi said one of the officers shot the man after a reported exchange of gunfire.

The suspect, who’s identity wasn’t immediately known, later died at a local-area hospital.

Eric Russell of the Tree of Justice League told ABC7 in Chicago that witnesses at the scene disagreed with the Police account.

“We understand that there was a gun. There was not a gun pointed at an officer, where his life would have been in danger where he would have to use deadly force,” Russell said.

The officer, whose name wasn’t released, will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days while the shooting is investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, the agency responsible for police oversight.

Both police officers had body cameras mounted at the time of the shooting.

Guglielmi says police found bullet holes in a vehicle on the street.
