Gun violence erupted toward the official end of the July Fourth weekend leaving over a dozen people dead and scores wounded in Chicago.

Chicago Police officials reported 56 shooting incidents in which 102 people were shot, including fifteen homicides between Friday evening and late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

Officials said the shootings occurred on Chicago’s West and South sides of the city.

The gun-related violence erupted despite the Chicago Police Department’s preventative efforts that included placing 1,300 extra cops on the streets, which has become standard practice over the long summer holiday weekends.

One of the victim’s family members John Davis told ABC7 his 56-year-old uncle, Tyrone Burdine, was gunned down in front of his home on Tuesday night.

“You just destroyed somebody’s family,” Davis said. “Here comes this car speeding through the alley, shooting.”

Davis described how other relatives including Burdine’s children managed to escape, the incoming gunfire, albeit narrowly.

“My mom, my auntie’s kids could have got killed. They don’t care.”

This year’s number of shooting incidents in Chicago more than doubled from last year’s July Fourth weekend, which saw 50 people shot, including three homicides.

Over the holiday weekend, Police did manage to take 158 illegal guns off the streets.
