A teen in California was sentenced to 13 years behind bars this week for her role in a prostitution ring involving girls as young as 14.

Jelinajane Bedrijo Almario was only 16-years-old when she was taken into custody in 2016 for human trafficking, sending threatening emails, and making terroristic threats.

Authorities say the teen began a prostitution ring with girls she met through friends and on social media, according to The Daily Mail.

“These people are great at locating kids with low self-esteem and being their friend, and then it changes once they started working for her,” Detective Richard Pontecorvo said.

She trapped at least four teens between 14- and 15-years-old into her scheme, and arranged for them to meet with men by posting their photos on different prostitution site. She then took them to various motels in Tulare County for sex.

The mother of one of the teens realized her daughter was missing and grew concerned. Investigators say Almario sent the mother threatening text messages when she asked where her daughter was.

The ring was operating for only a few weeks before Almario was arrested.

Although she was a minor when she was apprehended, she was tried as an adult due to the severity of her offenses.

She was sentenced to 13 years on Monday, two days after her 18th birthday.
