Authorities in Georgia arrested a woman in connection with the stabbing deaths of her four children and their father in a suburban Atlanta home on Thursday.

Gwinnett County Police officials charged 33-year-old Isabel Martinez with a litany of charges including five counts of murder, five counts of malice murder, and six counts of aggravated assault on Thursday.

Police said Martinez was remanded to the Gwinnett County Jail on no bail and she has also been placed on an immigration hold.

Law enforcement officials said Martinez called 911 around 4:47 a.m. from the home she shared with her family in Loganville after committing the murders of her husband Martin Romero, 33, and their four children, 10-year-old Isabela Martinez, 7-year-old Dacota, 4-year-old Dillan, and 2-year-old Axel.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the fifth sibling, 9-year-old Diana Romero, managed to survive the horrific attack after she was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she remains in critical condition.

A Go FundmePage set up by a family member of Martin Romero, said the girl is expected to remain hospitalized for the next three weeks while she recovers from her stab wounds.

According to the arrest warrant, the gruesome stabbing deaths occurred sometime between 2 am, and 4 am.

The family recently moved to Georgia from Illinois. Neighbors told WSBTV that Martinez had been depressed over the recent death of her father but never gave any indication she would harm herself or her family.

“The suspect in custody is the wife/mother of the victims involved,” Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a statement.

Pihera added that Investigators initially had difficulty with a language barrier because Martinez spoke Spanish, but were working to determine a motive for “this horrendous crime.”

“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand,” said Pihera.

“This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but the extended family, neighborhood, and community.”
