A flight attendant broke a wine bottle over on a man’s head as he lunged for the exit door and fought with other passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight destined for Beijing.

Officials revealed that 23-year-old Joseph Daniel Hudek IV, of Tampa, Florida forced the flight to return to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Thursday as he tried to force open an exit door before getting into an altercation with flight attendants and passengers.

In a probable cause statement on Friday, FBI special agent Caryn Highley said that during the incident, Hudek punched a flight attendant twice in the face and hit at least one passenger in the head with a wine bottle.

As the fight proceeded, a flight attendant took two bottles of wine and hit Hudek over the head breaking at least one, CBS News reported.

According to one attendant, “Hudek did not seem impacted by the breaking of a liter bottle over his head, and shouted, ‘Do you know who I am?’ or something to that extent,” the complaint stated.

Several passengers eventually managed to hold Hudek down long enough to zip-tie him.

The man, who appeared in U.S. District Court on Friday, was charged with flight crew interferences, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine. He is expected to remain in custody at least his detention hearing scheduled for July 13th.

One flight attendant and a passenger were brought to the hospital after sustaining severe facial injuries.

Hudek was in the first row of the plane’s first-class section. He asked a flight attendant for a beer before takeoff, but he exhibited no sign of being under the influence and ordered no other alcoholic beverages.

One hour into the flight, while the plane traveled over the Pacific Ocean, Hudek went into the restroom. He came out quickly, asked the flight attendant a question, and went back in.

When he came out of the bathroom again, he lunged for the exit door, grabbed the handle and attempted to open it. Two attendants grabbed him, but he fought them away, and the attendants waved for help from passengers and informed the cockpit by telephone.

Hudek then punched one flight attendant and hit a passenger with a bottle.

Hudek was placed in a head-lock by a passenger before he was zip-tied. Even then he remained aggressive, and it took multiple passengers to keep him restrained until the plane landed and he was arrested.
