Members of the Gulf Cartel in Mexico were busted attempting to dig their way out of a Tamaulipas state prison through a 300-meter long tunnel.

Tamaulipas state police uncovered the tunnel this week in the rear part of the facility.

Authorities in Tamaulipas said the makeshift tunnel was roughly 300 meters in length and spanned from inside the prison out toward the outer perimeter fence.

Police indicated that the tunnel was unfinished but ordered in reinforcements to guard the facility to prevent a breakout, Breitbart Texas reported.

Authorities discovered the tunnel in a prison in Reynosa

Since May, Reynosa has been ground zero for a brutal war between rival factions of the Gulf Cartel. The fighting has resulted in over 95 murders and dozens of arrests.

State police have previously discovered tunnels, bunkers, and weapon caches inside the facility. Early this year, dozens of prisoners with Los Zetas Cartel dug their way out of another prison in Ciudad Victoria. In recent months, inmates waged a war for control of the penitentiary in Ciudad Victoria using machine guns.
