Cleveland prep school star quarterback Michael Chappman who helped lead his team to a city football championship last season has died from injuries suffered in a drive-by shooting earlier this month.

According to WJW-TV, he mother of 17-year-old Michael Chappman has confirmed her son died Sunday at the Cleveland hospital where had been confined since the July 6 shooting at a small Cleveland park.

Niecey Bryant who remained at her son’s bedside since the shooting said one of the bullets that was still lodged inside Chappman’s body, had traveled and damaged some of his organs.

“It went across my spine, like my whole body numb,” Chappman told the TV station right after his shooting.

Doctors said they had feared the prep star would never walk again.

Cleveland police officials said the teen had gone to the park with a friend after leaving work that afternoon when shots were fired from a vehicle, hitting Chappman twice from behind.

Police continue to investigate the tragic incident but have yet to make any arrests in Chappman’s death.

Michael Chappman would have been a senior this year at John Hay High School.

He earned an honorable mention for the Division III Northeast Lakes District team last season.

Family members had set up a GoFundMe account asking help with Michael’s “impending rehabilitation and treatment.”
