Authorities captured a wanted member of the ruthless New Generation Cartel responsible for the 2013 assassination of Jesus Gallegos Álvarez, the Jalisco State Secretary of Tourism, following a shootout with military forces in the Terra Caliente Region of Mexico on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office in Michoacan announced the arrest of Martin “G” alias “El Pantera” or “The Panther” the reputed head of a criminal cell belonging to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

“El Pantera” was arrested with six other cartel suspects following a shootout with military forces in the municipality of La Union Isidoro Montes de Oca, Guerrero, Mexico’s most violent state, Proceso reported.

The operation was launched as part of a new comprehensive strategy aimed at improving the deteriorating security situation in Guerrero, which has been riddled with drug-related violence.

Officials said military forces mobilized after receiving information regarding the presence of several heavily armed men in the community of Petacalco, which sits on the border with Michoacan.

“El Pantera” was captured following an operation in the state of Guerrero around dawn on Wednesday

According to to the statement, a detachment of Mexican Marines assisted by Army, federal, and municipal police units arrived on the scene and immediately came under intense automatic gunfire from the armed suspects.

Mexican Marines managed to repel the attack, arresting seven suspects in the process, while seizing several automatic weapons designated for the exclusive use of the military.

Although reports have yet to indicate whether there were casualties in the ensuing firefight, officials did confirm that a senior police commander was rushed to a hospital with gunshot wounds to the leg and forearm.

Authorities said “El Pantera,” who leads a criminal cell operating in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, had an arrest warrant from the Michoacán Attorney General for various crimes, including kidnapping, homicide, and extortion.

Moreover, officials said, “El Pantera” had direct involvement in the death of  Jesus Gallegos Álvarez, a millionaire resort developer who settled in Houston for seven years before returning to his native Mexico to serve as the Jalisco Secretary of Tourism.

However, just eight days after assuming office, gunmen executed Gallegos after his vehicle was intercepted in the city of Zapopan, Jalisco’s second largest city.

According to Milenio, one of the suspected hit men arrested in the case who allegedly participated in the murder of the Tourism Secretary told investigators that the execution was directly ordered by Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the CJNG.

The publication reported that “El Mencho” ordered the murder of  Gallegos after discovering the millionaire had been laundering illegal drug money for the rival Knights Templar Cartel.
