Gunmen massacred at least 16 people inside a drug rehabilitation center in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua in what authorities say was part of an apparent ongoing feud between drug cartels.

Officials said the death toll could rise with another six victims listed in critical condition.

According to Mexican News Outlet El Universal, the attack occurred in the Rosario neighborhood of the capital city of Chihuahua shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Preliminary information released by Mexican authorities indicate that a group of heavily armed assailants donning tactical gear arrived in a convoy of SUVs and stormed the Grupo Uniendo Familias drug rehab center and executed 16 people inside.

Six people including five men and one woman remain in a critical condition.

Mexican authorities attributed the attack to a longstanding turf war between a Sinaloa Cartel faction known as the Mexicles, and the Aztecas — an armed enforcer group for the Juarez drug cartel.

“Initial investigations prove that the attack was related to drug distribution and the feud between the Mexicles and Aztecas gangs,” said Carlos Huerta, spokesman for the state prosecutor’s office.

Huerta added that initial findings from the investigation concluded that four gunmen carried out the attack and indicated that some of the people at the center may have been members of the Mexicles.

Chihuahua remains ground zero for an intense turf war between the Sinaloa Cartel faction and the armed wing of the Juarez Cartel known as La Linea, allied with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Ciudad Juarez was considered the murder capital of the world at the height of the drug war in 2008.

After several years of relative peace, the border city is once again at the center of the conflict.

The Juarez border crossing into El Paso, Texas, is considered the crown jewel of drug trafficking corridors.

The city sees tons of narcotics and thousands of immigrants illegally smuggled into the U.S. every year.

In recent months, a paramilitary wing of the Sinaloa Cartel known as the “Gente Nueva del Tigre” or “New People of the Tiger” have spread messages on narco-banners and social media, warning the residents to stay indoors at night.

As JammedUp News reported, Chihuahua saw 17 murders occur over a 24-hour period last week. Six of the homicides occurred in Juarez.

Additionally, a fierce gunbattle back in July between Gente Nueva and La Linea resulted in the deaths of 26 gunmen in the rural community of Madera.

Since January, Chihuahua has recorded over 1,900 homicides.
