Atlantic City boxer Omar Curry sentenced to 20 years for his role in 2014 killing

Omar Curry, a professional boxer from Atlantic City, New Jersey was sentenced to 20 years Friday for the murder of a local man in 2014.

Curry, 27, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, unlawful weapon possession, and maintaining and operating a controlled substance production facility in July and will spend at least 17 years behind bars before he will be eligible for parole, a statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office revealed.

Prosecutors accused Omar Curry of shooting and killing 32-year-old Nelson Viera in January 2014.

Viera was pronounced dead at local hospital.

Curry made his debut as a professional boxer in August 2014, in a lightweight bout at Bally’s Atlantic City, NJ.com reported.

He boxed with the Police Athletic League as a child. Three days after he made his boxing debut, he was arrested and charged with Viera’s killing.
