A Mexican federal agent and his mother were gunned down after cartel gunmen ambushed their vehicle in northern Mexico. The attacks occurred on Friday, the same day the mayor in the western Michoacan state was shot and killed outside his home.

While the gunmen in both attacks fled, both regions have been engulfed with gun battles between drug gangs and Mexican authorities, and by turf wars between drug cartels.

The Mexican federal agent — who has been identified as 35-year-old Julio Cesar Baez Guillen — was with his 65-year-old mother and his 31-year-old girlfriend when shooters pulled alongside their vehicle and opened fire, according to the Chihuahua state prosecutor’s office.

Baez and his mother were killed, but the agent’s girlfriend, also an intelligence agent, was injured but survived, Diario reported.

Baez had been working at the Puente Grande maximum-security federal penitentiary in Jalisco, notorious for being the facility from which infamous drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman made his first escape in 2001.

Guzman is currently behind bars and is awaiting trial in the U.S. on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering.

Chihuahua, which sits on the border with Texas and is a major transit hub for drugs into the U.S., forms the notorious “Golden Triangle” with Durango and Sinaloa.

The region is known for the cultivation of marijuana and the poppy flowers used to produce heroin and where drug cartel violence is widespread.

In a separate incident, Stalin Sanchez Gonzalez, the mayor of Paracho in Michoacan, was gunned down Friday morning as he walked outside his home.

Mexican authorities have arrested five suspects in the murder of Sanchez Gonzalez, Proceso reported.

Almost 50 mayors across the country have been killed since 2003, the Mexico’s National Association of Mayors revealed.
