A fugitive double murder suspect, who was sought after by police in Texas for the slaying of his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend in February before fleeing to Mexico, was killed by military forces.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office had a string of outstanding capital murder warrants for Isai Varela, 27, of Alamo, for his purported role in the killings of 26-year-old Felishia Solis and 30-year-old Jose Alfredo Zuñiga at an apartment near the city of Donna.

Solis’ two children ages three and six were in the home at the time of the murders.

Although a motive has not been established, Varela was Solis’ ex-boyfriend.

Isai Varela, 27, of Alamo died after a shootout with the Mexican military, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

After the killings, Varela bolted to the Mexican border city of Rio Bravo.

The double murder suspect went missing until over eight months later when he was killed in a firefight with Mexican military forces.

With the help of the FBI and Mexican officials, sheriff’s deputies verified that the remains discovered was Varela, according to Valley Central.

The border cities of Rio Bravo and Reynosa are ground zero for a continuing turf war as rival groups of the Gulf Cartel continue to battle for control of the area.

The violence in Mexico creates a series of near-daily shootings, abductions, and drive-by shootings where innocent victims are wounded and killed.

It is not clear if, whether he was working with one of the factions of the Gulf Cartel.
