The mayor of the small rural community of Turicato in the Mexican state of Michoacan was arrested for murder after her husband and bodyguard killed an alleged drug cartel member who happened to be a rival politician’s son.

The Michoacan Attorney General’s Office moved against Maria Gisela Vasquez Alaniz after her husband and chief bodyguard had combatted an assassination attempt outside of her residence in August, according to Breitbart Texas.

Local media outlets identified the victim as Jorge G. M.–the 28-year-old son of a politician belonging to a rival party. Breitbart Texas reported that Jorge was threatening Vasquez for months on behalf of the  Jalisco Nueva Generacion drug cartel also known as the CJNG.

Maria Gisela Vasquez was arrested on murder charges after her husband and chief bodyguard killed a suspected cartel member who happened to be the son of a rival politician.

Jorge has been identified as a member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a group that garnered a reputation for extreme violence. In recent months, CJNG has declared war with other cartels over control of drug production territories and the southern port of Lazaro Cardenas, where a significant portion of drugs and its precursors come into the country.

Local press outlets also reported that Jorge was unarmed at the time of his killed when he reportedly threatened and assaulted Vasquez.

Before the shooting, Vasquez filed two complaints claiming to be the target of cartel threats.

In those complaints, Jorge was named as one of the men responsible. Vasquez added that her husband, in his capacity as the chief bodyguard and licensed peace officer, was legally armed at the time of the incident for protection.
