A father and son have died of a purported heroin overdose after they went outside to smoke.

Joseph Andrade, 44, and his son, 22-year-old Carlos, were discovered fighting for breath outside the father’s apartment in Brooklyn at roughly 3 am Sunday. Neither of them lived despite efforts to resuscitate them.

Carlos was in New York from Maryland with his girlfriend and kids for a birthday party.

Jasmin Santos, the 23-year-old mother of Carlos’ 11-month-old and 4-year-old sons, became nervous when the two men went missing after going outside and discovered Carlos inside the building’s doorway with his face purple.

Police believe the two men snorted a combination of heroin and fentanyl.

Emergency personnel administered Narcan, which reverses the effects of opioids, and the father and son were raced to Lutheran Hospital, approximately two miles away, according to the New York Daily News.

Life-saving efforts were not successful, and they were pronounced dead just after 4 am.

Investigators were seen later that morning examining a plastic baggie on the sidewalk near the scene.

Neighbors and relatives told the New York Post that Carlos was a devoted father to his sons, and did not have a known history of drug use.

Joseph, on the other hand, had a past with illicit drugs.
