Law enforcement officials revealed that a man purposely got himself arrested for shoplifting so he could take part in a drug smuggling ring operating out of a jail in New Mexico.

According to the KOB, Kelby Spain was charged last week with conspiring to bring contraband into the Curry County Detention Center .

However, investigators said that the 23-year-old’s plot started earlier this month.

Spain was released from jail on October 3od in connection with drug and robbery charges only to be re-arrested two hours later.

A convenience store employee told police that Spain had “walked into the beer aisle, picked up a Bud Light, told her to call the cops, then walked out.”

Authorities later discovered marijuana on Spain while he was locked up.

It remains unclear how Spain smuggled the drugs into the jail. However, police believe another suspect who was also released from custody, identified as 23-year-old Manuel Duran was complicit in the drug smuggling ring.

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Duran, who remains on the lam, while Spain remains in custody.
