A drug cartel battling for control of the Mexican state of Michoacan escalated brutal acts of violence by dismembering innocent victims and roasting their remains to leverage local support. Such methods are becoming a part of daily life as officials continue to minimize safety concerns.

Members of the Nueva Familia Michoacana Cartel conducted a series of gory slayings in the rural areas between Apatzingan and La Ruana earlier this week.

Cartel operatives abducted 11 victims from which the remains of only three were found, Breitbart Texas reported..

The victims were not members of a rival cartel–they were merely locals who refused to support the cartel. Gunmen cut off the heads from their bodies and then dismembered various body-parts. The cartel put some of the human remains on a grill and cooked them.

The violence unleashed agaisnt locals come at a time when the Nueva Familia Michoacana are engaged in a brutal turf war with local cells from Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion for control of Michoacan

Drug cartel members took photos of the gruesome scene and then distributed them to locals to instill terror. The threat was a warning to residents who did not provide support to the group would have a similar fate.

The assailants used knives to carve the letters “LNFM” in the torsos of the victims and left some body parts in the surrounding areas.

The horrific acts of violence carried out by the Nueva Familia Michoacana occur as they remain enthralled in a violent turf war with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel for control of Michoacan.

The southern state is home to the port city of Lazaro Cardenas, which provides cartels access to the Pacific Ocean and is also considered to be a lucrative area for drug production.
