The power vacuum that appeared after the arrest of a leading Sinaloa cartel regional boss is likely to cause an increase–or at least sustain–the continuing violence plaguing the Mexican border state of Chihuahua.

State officials recently announced the apprehension of Julio Cesar “El Tigre” Escargega Murillo, also known as “El Tigre” who is identified as the presumed head of the ultra-violent Sinaloa Cartel faction called Gente Nueva del Tigre.

State police agents conduct pre-dawn dawn operation last Sunday to nab the drug lord in Cuauhtemoc.

Escarcega is the son of Cipriano “Pano” Escarcega Aranda, the police chief in Carichi, who was recently abducted, likely by Juarez Cartel members, the bitter rivals of Gente Nueva.

Escarcega Murillo, who also goes by the alias “El 109” or “El Comandante,” was located driving a Jeep along with five of his associates who were in possession of several high=powered assault rifles and grenade launchers.

Authorities said one of the gunmen is a minor and will be charged as a juvenile.

“El Tigre” and his four cohorts face charges of possession of federal weapons for the exclusive use of the military and organized criminal offenses, Proceso reported.

Although “El Tigre” is wanted by Mexican federal officials on various charges related to his role as a drug kingpin, Chihuahua, state prosecutors have charged him in connection with the abduction of three men and two underage teens in 2015.

The victims were kidnapped from different parts of Cuauhtemoc in 2015 and tortured at a warehouse to abstract information about the slaying of a taxi driver.

The Sinaloa faction, Gente Nueva del Tigre, is actively battling factions of the Juarez Cartel named “La Linea” allied with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and “Los Aztecas” also known as “Barrio Azteca.”
