A pair of Mexican police officers have been charged with murder after gunning down two men from Kansas.

According to the Mexican publication the Saltillo Herald, Demetrius Atkins Junior, and Edgar Hugo Valdes Rodriguez were traveling last Saturday through Saltillo for a vacation in Guanajuato.

The men were pulled over by two Mexican municipal police officers from a local law enforcement task force responsible for enforcing the security of three cities in the area.

KWCH reported that the two officials approached the truck and began shooting.

Valdes-Rodriguez was in the driver’s seat and was shot in the head six times. Atkins Junior was murdered shortly after as he attempted to shield himself from the gunfire.

Prosecutors indicated that neither victim was armed.

Now, the two officers are in prison and are facing murder charges.

The two men will be sentenced November 6th, where they could face between 18 and 50 years behind bars.

Atkins Junior’s mother told Eyewitness News she still has many questions about what caused her son and Edgar’s death, she says the family wants justice but most of all, to bring her son home.

The mother is in contact with the U.S. consulate to bring her son back to Kansas.
