A Mexican Marine and seven gunmen who were reportedly part of the Gulf Cartel were killed earlier this week in a violent gun battle in Tamaulipas – located near the Texas border.

The firefight occurred Monday at dawn on the Victoria-Matamoros highway, in the rural area of El Moquetito, located 30 minutes away from Matamoros.

Officials haven’t released the identity of the Mexican Marine killed in the confrontation.

The gunbattle forced authorities to close the highway for several hours, Proceso reported.

The city and its nearby highways have a lengthy history of being under the control of organized crime groups.

Matamoros and its surrounding cities are under the control of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel.

The group controls the area’s drug and human smuggling corridors into Texas.

Rival Gulf Cartel factions have been fighting an internal war for control of Reynosa.

The internal conflict has resulted in a dramatic increase in violence and shootouts throughout northern Tamaulipas.
