Philly Police charge 86-year-old woman in bank robbery

An 86-year-old elderly woman with a walker in Philadelphia was taken into custody on Tuesday after she pointed a gun at a bank teller and ordered the employee to hand her over $400.

According to Philadelphia’s Fox 29, Emily Coakley went to the same bank the day before, but when she counted her cash after she went home, she thought she had been shortchanged by $400.

Then on Tuesday, she took a gun, her walker and went back to the bank.

Authorities quickly moved in to arrest the elderly woman. She was handcuffed and escorted out with her walker.

The woman was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, terroristic threats and related charges, and was let go on her own recognizance.

“That’s unusual. I never heard of a bank robber that age and armed,” John McDonald said as he stood outside of the bank.

FBI agents examined the woman’s .38-caliber revolver used in the bank robbery and determined that the firearm was not loaded, but she had bullets with her.
