An Ohio corrections officer was arrested after she confessed to having sex with at least one inmate and smuggling contraband into the prison where she worked.

Nakisha Newell, 28, was immediately terminated after investigators in Butler County received a tip that the corrections officer — who had working there only 18 months — was smuggling contraband into the county jail, including a phone and e-cigarettes, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

Detectives later discovered that Newell also participated in sexual activity with at least one prisoner at the jail, The Dayton Daily News reported.

The investigation into Newell began after an ‘observant corrections sergeant’ tipped off her superiors

“Being a corrections officer is a noble but tough job,” Jones stated. “These men and women work hard and have to be on their guard. My employees take pride and strive to ensure this facility maintains a great reputation. She has tarnished that, and I do not want people like that working for me.”

The woman has been charged with sexual battery, which is considered a third-degree felony, and Jones noted that additional charges may still come about. She has also been charged with another count of sexual battery and two counts of conveyance, which is a misdemeanor.

The investigation into Newell was launched with an “educated hunch” by a corrections sergeant who reported it to supervisors, Major Mike Craft of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said.

“He had seen things he didn’t think were right,” Craft said. “He did a great job bringing information to us.”

Newell admitted to having sex with a male inmate when she was being questioned about the contraband. It’s not clear if the inmate will also face charges.
