Authorities say a man accused of kidnapping an Oregon woman and her child was arrested after he took the victim to a store and she quietly mouthed the words “help me” to several shoppers.

Marion County Sheriff’s officials said 25-year-old Christopher Hahn-Collins, of Salem, broke into the victim’s residence on Friday and waited for the unidentified woman and her child to return home.

Hahn-Collins held the mother and child captive at knifepoint overnight. She managed to convince the suspect to take her to a store where she mouthed “help me” to several people, who immediately contacted authorities.

According to Fox12, deputies responding to the scene rescued the two kidnapping victims and arrested Hahn-Collins.

Investigators said the woman didn’t know Hahn-Collins. He appeared in Marion County Circuit Court on Monday where he was charged with multiple counts including kidnapping, burglary, coercion and unlawful use of a weapon.

“I have to commend our victim in this case because she remained calm, she did what she needed to do to keep her family safe and get him to a location to where she could obviously summon help,” Lt. Chris Baldridge with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said. in a statement.

It wasn’t immediately known if Hahn-Collins had hired an attorney.
