A Florida man is dead, and his acquaintance is facing a charge of third-degree murder after a drug deal went awry.

Authorities said 21-year-old Ecru Richardson was shot and killed at The Oaks Apartments last week.

According to WFLA, officers were dispatched to the complex around 9 am on Thursday after receiving reports of shots fired.

The caller, Daundrea Butler said his friend was shot and they were rushing to the hospital.

Butler said he dropped Richardson off at the apartment, but didn’t know why he needed to go. His car was seen driving into the complex, and later at the rear of the complex, and parked near the front.

Twenty minutes after he parked, Richardson raced back to the car, and the men left the complex. Detectives said that Butler knew his friend had been shot and took him to the hospital, where Richardson died.

Authorities later discovered that the men went to the complex to meet someone for a drug deal. Richardson was shot by an unidentified individual while Butler waited in the car.

It’s not clear what circumstance resulted in Butler’s arrest, but he was arrested and charged with third-degree murder. He remains at the Hillsborough County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
