Almost two dozen locals from towns in the southern part of Michoacan in Mexico have lost their homes to the fury of drug cartels. The cartels continue to battle for control of the area while state officials turn a blind eye to the violence.

Los Viagras, a group of former self-defense members and are part of the Nueva Familia Michoacana, have been victimizing families in Buena Vista, Nueva Italia, La Ruana and Apatzingan since the beginning of December, according to Breitbart Texas.

Because Los Viagras consist of former self-defense members, they can work with almost complete impunity in the state.

The group targets and kidnaps businessmen they allege are siding with their rivals, Jalisco New Generation Cartel or CJNG.

The CJNG and Nueva Familia Michoacana have been engulfed in a bloody war for control of the southern portion of the state that awards them access to profitable drug regions as well as access to the Port of Lazaro Cardenas.

The port is one of the busiest in the country, allowing drug cartels to access the Pacific Ocean where they can receive drug loads as well as precursors needed to produce synthetic drugs like meth.

In their battle for control of the area, both groups have resorted to kidnapping and killing their rivals.

The cartels also terrorize residents with their violent tactics.

In one of the recent murders, cartel gunmen forced a teen to admit to his activities with their rivals as well as their relationship with corrupt military officials.

After he confessed, the cartel hitmen beheaded the teen.

Despite the out of control violence occurring throughout the state, Michoacan Governor Silvano Aureoles Conejo continues to contend that the security conditions are getting better as he travels to China and California to promote tourism and commerce.
