Arizona man given natural life for the first-degree murder of business associate

An Arizona judge has sentenced a man convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the killing a business associate, to natural life in prison plus an additional 14 years in prison for other offenses.

On Friday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Reinstein handed down the sentencing 42-year-old Juan Luis Zermeno for the killing of his former business partner, 38-year-old Jesus Cortez.

According to AZcentral, a jury convicted Zermano on Oct. 17 of first-degree murder, burglary, and trafficking in stolen property.

The body of Cortez was discovered in his home on Dec. 14, 2014, The victim had been stabbed over 100 times.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said the sentencing holds Zermeno responsible for “his senseless and unjustifiable acts.”
