An elderly California couple who were arrested in Nebraska with 60 pounds of marijuana in their truck told cops the weed was meant to be Christmas presents.

York County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the elderly couple during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

According to the York New-Times, police pulled over the Toyota Tacoma driven by 80-year-old Patrick Jiron, 80, and his wife, 83-year-old Barbara Jiron, for a traffic violation.

As deputies approached the couple, they detected the strong odor of raw weed emanating from the pickup.

Officers found the bags of marijuana weighing 60 pounds in boxes stored inside the pickup’s topper.

Authorities said the weed had an estimated street value of over $336,000.

Lt. Paul Vrbka said the elderly couple told officers they were driving from California to Vermont.

“They said the marijuana was for Christmas presents,” Lt. Vrbka noted.

Police booked the elderly couple into the York County jail on two felony counts including possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp.

Both suspects remain in custody on no bond.
