Police in Cleveland, Ohio says a black gang member who walked up to a random white woman he didn’t know, accused her of being a white supremacist and assaulted her without provocation has been charged with a hate crime.

According to Cleveland.com, authorities charged 24-year-old Jermaine Hines Jr. early Thursday with felony ethnic intimidation.

Officials said Hines walked up to a 51-year-old woman in August, punched her and knocked the victim to the ground after accusing her of being a white supremacist and member of the Ku Klux Klan.

The woman told police she had no affiliation with any white supremacist group and didn’t know Hines.

Court documents cited a Cleveland Police detective who confirmed that Hines is a documented street gang member.

Online court records don’t say whether Hines has hired an attorney who could comment on the hate crime charges.
