For the second time in less than a week, a Mexican lawmaker in the western state of Jalisco was assassinated by a group of unidentified gunmen.

Mexican authorities said Saúl Galindo Plazola, a member of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), a center-left party, was executed on Wednesday around 9 a.m. at his ranch in the municipality of Tomatlan, located in western Jalisco.

A spokeswoman for the state attorney general’s office said Plazola was shot in the head multiple times at close range by several unidentified gunmen, Proceso reported.

Plazola was the justice committee chairman in the Jalisco state congress.

At a press conference, Víctor Hugo Prado Vázquez, president of the PRD party in Jalisco strongly condemned the murder of fellow party member.

“Our companion, who was the former mayor of Tomatlan, deputy of the 61st Legislature and president of the Justice Commission, was assassinated in a cowardly, devious way, in silence,” Prado Vázquez said.

The official demanded swift justice from authorities to arrest those responsible for the assassination.

“We do not want to speculate on who the intellectual and material authors were. What we want and demand is that there is an investigation with objectivity, with certainty, that justice is applied to arrest the suspects responsible” Prado Vázquez stated.

Officials said authorities were not aware of any type of threat that may have been made towards the PRD official.

Although the State Attorney General, who is overseeing the investigation refused to speculate on a possible motive for the attack, Tomatlan is a region ravaged by drug violence and is considered a stronghold of the hyper-violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful organized crime syndicates.

The group has been responsible for numerous deadly attacks on local police officials and state lawmakers.

Earlier this week, gunmen also executed an official for the center-left Citizens’ Movement, the party which holds the mayor’s office in the Jalisco state capital of Guadalajara, according to Reuters.

Both murders occurred ahead of next summer’s elections when Mexicans will go to the polls to elect new national, state and local lawmakers.

According to the Plazola’s Twitter feed, he had recently registered to run as a candidate for mayor of Tomatlan, a position he had previously held.

Elections in Mexico have been known to cause an uptick in violence, especially in areas where drug cartels seek to impose influence and leverage over local political leaders.
