The recently kidnapped teenage son of a top Mexican Police commander was found executed in the resort city of Los Cabos on Saturday morning.

Authorities in the Baja Peninsula confirmed the death of the 17-year-old son of Genaro Cervantes, who is the commander of the General Directorate of Public Security of Los Cabos.

The Baja California State Attorney General’s Office said the victim was discovered around 6:00 am Saturday morning in the Costa Azul neighborhood of Los Cabos.

Officials said the victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.

The teen was reportedly abducted by gunmen from his home in the Guaymitas neighborhood of San José del Cabo on Friday night.

The Mexican news outlet Vanguardia identified Genaro Cervantes as the top law enforcement official who oversees security operations in a sector of the city which has been engulfed in cartel-related violence.

State security officials also revealed that Cervantes had been subjected to credible threats in recent weeks, but refused to further elaborate.

For years, Los Cabos was largely considered a safe haven from the drug violence afflicting the rest of the country, where millions of vacationing Americans visited each year.

However, more recently, the resort city has been transformed into a cartel battlefield.

The entire Baja Penisula had firmly been under the control of the Sinaloa Cartel headed by infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

With Guzman’s arrest and subsequent extradition in 2017, his Sinaloa Cartel has since split into warring factions, who are fighting each other and the upstart Jalisco New Generation for control of the region.

In 2017, Baja California Sur saw the largest year-to-year increase in murder victims in Mexico, jumping 223 percent compared to the previous year.

The deadly trend has so far continued into the new year. Los Cabos has already recorded 11 executions in the first week of 2018.
