Cancun, Mexico proceeds to be a hotbed for violence after armed cartel members assaulted plainclothes cops at a gas station earlier this week.

According to El Pacifico, the most recent attack left two state police investigators injured and one cartel gunman dead after a dispute at a gas station near a busy shopping outlet district.

The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s office revealed that the cartel gunmen followed the detective’s car to a gas station in a truck. One officer went into the store while the other fueled the vehicle.

The gunmen made a U-turn, drove into the gas station, and opened fire.

One of the officers rushed out of the store and immediately opened fire, killing one of the gunmen.

Officials said the second armed assailant fled the scene, assumably wounded.

Mexican authorities said the officer at the gas pumps was hit at least seven times but is expected to survive.

The state prosecutor also proposed that the gunmen could have mistaken the plainclothes officers in an unmarked vehicle as members of a rival cartel.

Drug-related violence in the Quintana Roo tourist centers has surged exponentially in the last two years.

According to the attorney general’s office, the state’s murder rate reached 326 last year, surpassing the previous record set in 2016 for 137 cartel-related murders.

The Benito Juarez municipality, where Cancun is located, recorded 326 organized-related crime murders in 2017. Solidaridad, where Playa del Carmen is located, had 58 drug-related murders, and nearby Puerto Morelos recorded 31 homicides.
