Cartel gunmen in the once tranquil state of Guanajuato ambushed a local hospital and murdered a male who survived a shooting from the night before that resulted in the deaths of five of his associates.

The targeted slaying took place on January 17th in the municipality of Salvatierra, which is in the southeastern region of the state, located roughly 90 miles from the capital of Guanajuato.

The group of armed assassins also murdered a municipal police officer who was providing security for the injured victim, Breitbart Texas reported.

The state attorney general’s office for Guanajuato reported that witnesses described seeing five, armed cartel gunmen arriving outside the hospital at 9 am. Three of the gunmen found the victim in the emergency room and began shooting him, murdering him and the police officer who was protecting him.

The attorney general’s office further indicated that the male victim was the only survivor in an attack the night prior when he and five associates were shot by gunmen who attacked a home in the municipality of Salvatierra.

The attorney general noted that several of the victims were being investigated for illegal drug activity.

In surveillance footage taken at the hospital, three cartel gunmen were seen entering with firearms drawn, accompanied by a male who has a rifle pointed at his back. The male, who is likely an employee, points to a room, where the injured man was recovering. A gunman quickly walked into the room while two others stayed in the hall providing cover.

After the hitman murdered the man and the security officer, he is seen again in the hallway, and the gunmen quickly flee the hospital. The entire incident took place in 13 seconds. A nurse and a relative visiting the victim were also injured.

For years, the state of Guanajuato was considered peaceful and spared from the cartel turmoil. In 2006, the state recorded 242 homicide and in 2015, the number increase to 879. In 2017, at least 1,800 murders were reported.

Drug cartels fighting over control of the state has accounted for the steady increase in hostilities in addition to challenges against the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which currently controls the state.

In October, a group who called themselves the Cártel Santa Rosa de Lima Guanajuato published a video on social media declaring war against the CJNG.
