Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper arrested on corruption charges

A mayor in Florida has been terminated from her post after she was arrested by the FBI on corruption charges.

According to The Sun-Sentinel, Governor Rick Scott signed an executive order Friday suspending Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper from office as she faces charges.

The Broward State Attorney’s Office revealed that Cooper, who turned herself in on Thursday, has been charged with money laundering, misconduct and exceeding campaign contribution limits after an undercover probe conducted by the FBI. Prosecutors indicated that Cooper, a Democrat, has also been charged with the soliciting contributions in a government building.

Her lawyer, Larry Davis, says she intended to plead not guilty.

The felonies carry maximum sentences of five years behind bars. While the soliciting contribution charge, which is a misdemeanor, has a maximum one-year prison sentence.

Cooper has been the mayor of Hallandale Beach since 2005 and was previously a member of the city commission beginning in 1999.
