A U.S. citizen was taken into custody Friday after attempting to smuggle 76 undocumented immigrants, which included 13 children, across a checkpoint in Texas.

The immigrants, who are natives from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, were discovered in “good health” inside a tractor-trailer 83 near Laredo, U.S. Customs and Border Protection indicated in a news release.

The driver — whose identity hasn’t been revealed — was interviewed about his immigration status before he was detained, ABC13 reported.

“These criminal organizations view these individuals as mere commodities without regard for their safety. The blatant disregard for human life will not be tolerated. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to disrupt and dismantle these organizations and prosecute those responsible,” said Laredo Sector Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Gabriel Acosta.

In July, authorities in Texas rescued 39 undocumented immigrants packed inside a sweltering trailer in San Antonio. Ten of the migrants died.
