Purported smugglers with the Cartel Del Noreste, a faction of the Los Zetas criminal organization, were apprehended by Mexican soldiers as they were in the process of sending a shipment of over 1,400 pounds of marijuana destined for the U.S. market.

The arrest occurred along the federal highway that connects Nuevo Laredo’s International Bridge and is only utilized for moving cargo. Nuevo Laredo is located directly south of Laredo, Texas.

Military officials said the marijuana bundles had been marked with the letters CDN; which is a splinter of the Los Zetas based in Nuevo Laredo.

The drugs were in large wooden boxes that had been placed on top of a tractor-trailer, Breitbart Texas reported.

The soldiers were guarding the highway when they noticed a large group of individuals in a property lot.

When the suspects saw the soldiers, they attempted to flee, which led military personnel to enter the property and ascertain that the group had been hauling a drug shipment.

Police busted nine of the suspected smugglers and seized over 1,400 pounds of pot, despite their attempts to flee,

The suspicion that the smugglers had just received the drugs is based on the fact that they had been employing a forklift to unload the narcotics, along with the fact that a significant portion of the drugs were discovered in a van that was about to depart the area.
