The mayor of a rural municipality in the Mexican border state of Coahuila has remained silent after federal authorities discovered a shipment of marijuana in a truck that reportedly is owned by his transportation company.

The seizure took place last week when Mexico’s Federal Police agents were guarding the highway that joins Saltillo with Torreón and pulled over a truck hauling trailer, according to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

Officers discovered a massive load of drugs concealed in the trailer and then took the driver, who has only been identified as “Manuel N,” into custody, El Siglo de Torreón reported.

The marijuana was hidden inside a tractor-trailer vehicle owned by a mayor of a northern Mexican locality that moved along the highway that connects Saltillo with Torreón .

The tractor-trailer is allegedly registered to Transportes Evaristo Madero, a company owned by the mayor of Parras de La Fuente, Evaristo Madero.

Officials confirmed that they discovered 101 bundles of marijuana weighing over one ton.

A few days after the truck was seized, the Ecological Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) released a statement refuting any link between Madero and the drug trade.

Party officials maintain that this was a political attack and vowed to confront the perpetrators responsible.
