A 22-year-old woman from Mexico suffered a fractured spine after falling off of a 20-foot cliff while attempting to cross the U.S. border illegally.

U.S. Border Patrol last week detected a man on surveillance cameras walking near Highway 98 in California and quickly initiated contact with the individual.

According to CBS News, the man, a 44-year-old Mexican was “waving his hands” to grab the attention of anyone driving by and told authorities that his girlfriend had fallen off the cliff trying to cross the border.

The responding agents came to rescue of the woman — who was a 22-year-old Mexican national — and immediately contacted emergency rescue personnel.

Emergency responders placed the woman on a gurney and air-lifted her to a hospital.

An MRI at a nearby trauma hospital revealed that she had suffered a fractured spine.

Her current medical status has not been disclosed.

The man was arrested and processed for illegal entry.

Officials said the woman will be deported back to Mexico once she is discharged from the hospital.
