Off-duty Chicago Police officer dies of multiple gunshot wounds

An off-duty Chicago police officer was fatally shot while assisting a tactical team at a state government office building Tuesday afternoon.

Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the off-duty officer, identified as Paul Bauer was chasing a suspect around 2 p.m. in what witnesses believed was a robbery when he was “shot multiple times” in the city’s downtown business center.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Bauer, a CPD district commander, was “assisting a tactical team when he was shot by the armed assailant in the stairwell of the Thompson Center.”

The officer was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he later died from multiple gunshot wounds, Fox32 reported.

Guglielmi said police have taken a person into custody for questioning but he did say if the person is a suspect.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement following the death of the officer:

“The hearts of every Chicagoan are heavy as we mourn the loss Commander Paul Bauer. Commander Bauer stood for the highest ideals of our police department and our city – to serve and protect the people of Chicago. His death is a tragic reminder of the dangerous duty the men and women of our police department accept to ensure the safety of us all. I ask every Chicagoan to keep Commander Bauer, his family, his friends and the entire Chicago Police Department in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
